2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League

Event 1 Results

The first event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League was held Sunday 20th October at Perth Modern School and attracted 42 participants.


The participants each played 9 games in a very close and hard fought competition. For many of the players, this was their first ever chess tournament and everyone adapted well to playing under strict tournament rules for the first time.


The event was won by Tian Teh with an impressive 8 points, a full point ahead of Ethan Page and Aidan Malik who tied for second place each scoring 7. Ezra Levine took 4th place with 6.5 points, just ahead of Lucien Lim, Logan Absolom, Albert Chen, Daniel Luong and Liam Lougheed who tied for 5th place with a score of 6.


The following prizes were awarded:

1st place in the Open Division: Tian Teh - received a trophy.

2nd place in the Open Division: Ethan Page - received a medal.

3rd place in the Open Division: Ezra Levine - received a medal.


1st place in the Intermediate Division: Aidan Malik - received a trophy.

=2nd place in the Intermediate Division: Lucien Lim - received a medal.

=2nd place in the Intermediate Division: Liam Lougheed - received a medal.

=3rd place in the Intermediate Division: Viet Doan - received a medal.

Event 2 Results

The  second event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League was held  Sunday 27th October at Perth Modern School and attracted 46  participants.


There were 15 participants rated over 1000, making this an extremely strong  event. The games on the top boards were very tough, and the final  results weren't clear until after the final round.


The event was won by Nithuli Liyanage with a score of 7.5 points, only half  a point ahead of Aidan Malik and Quang Minh Le who tied for second  place each scoring 7. 4th place was shared by Albert Chen and Akash  Ashok with a score of 6.5 points. Aidan was leading the tournament the  entire day and only lost his lead in the final round by losing to Quang  Minh. This allowed Nithuli to leapfrog over him and take the win.

Event 3 Results

The third event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed  Chess League was held Sunday 3rd November at Perth Modern School and  attracted 41 participants.


There were 14 participants rated over 1000, making this another extremely  strong event. The games on the top boards were very tough, with the lead  changing hands many times over the course of the tournament.


The event was won by Quang Minh Le with a score of 7.5 points, only half a  point ahead of second placed Peter Sun who scored 7. Third place was  shared by Tian Teh and Florentyna Rithauddin, both scoring of 6.5  points. Six players scored 6 points, tying for 5th place:  Albert Chen,  Kaviru Perera, Uudamkhishig Togtmol, Carlson Leo, James Sommerfield and  Pranav Balasubramaniam.


The lead up to the end was extremely exciting. With only two games to go  there was a 5-way tie for first place between Quang Minh Le, Tian Teh,  Florentina Rithauddin, Kaviru Perera and Albert Chen. At the start of  the final round, Quang Minh, Tian and Florentina were tied for first  place leading to some tense final round games. Quang Minh defeated  Florentina, while Tian lost to Peter Sun. This left Quang Minh as the  sole champion.

Peter seemingly came  out of nowhere, winning his last 4 games in a row to steal second place.  A fantastic display of shear persistence.

Event 4 Results

The fourth event of the 2024 Perth Junior  Speed Chess League was held on Sunday 17th November at Perth Modern  School and attracted 51 participants.


There were 16 participants rated over 1000, making this the strongest Perth  Junior Speed Chess League event so far. Despite this, there were many  upsets during the event with many intermediate level players, and even  some novice players, scoring nice wins against far more experienced  opponents.


The event was convincingly won by Quang Minh Le who finished the event  undefeated with a score of 8.5 points. In fact, Quang Minh's performance  was so strong that he had the tournament victory sealed before the  start of the last round. An amazing performance.

Second  place was shared between Albert Chen and Ethan Page, both showing very  strong performances, scoring 7 points. There was a three-way tie for  fourth place between Shawn Boby, Florentyna Rithauddin and Uudamkhishig  Togtmol, all scoring 6.5 points.


The Intermediate division was very close and exciting with five players  tied for first place at the end, all scoring 5.5 points.  Zeno  Brackenridge, Alex Chan, Uranbaigali Uuganbaatar, Alex Low and Shijirgun  Nyamdari all had very strong finishes to the tournament. They all  received first place trophies.

There  were four intermediate division players only half a point behind: Oscar  Chan, Shijirkhutag Nyamdari, Anay Patro and Damsara Perera. Overall, it  was a very close contest.


The Novice Division was won by Chloe Seow with a score of 4.5. Chloe had  some excellent results throughout the day, in some cases drawing and  even beating opponents hundreds of rating points higher than her. Only  half a point behind Chloe, there was a five-way tie for second place  between Isaac Wu, Teddy Sprigg, Monol Lee, Erdem Dush and Hugo  Vojkovich, all scoring 4 points.

Event 5 Results

The fifth event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed  Chess League was held on Sunday 24th November at Perth Modern School  and attracted 36 participants.


The event was won by Shawn Boby and  Uudamkhishig Togtmol who tied for  first place with a score of 7.5 points. Second place was taken by Albert  Chen, only half a point behind the leaders with a score of 7 points.  Peter Sun had another strong performance, scoring 6.5 points and taking  the third place prize.

Special  mention should be made of James Sommerfield's performance. He had the  highest countback of the event, having played 7 of the other top 11  players and he still manage to score 5 points. The computer pairing  program had a grudge on him today it seems!


The Intermediate division was won by Anay Patro who scored 5.5 points.   Anay picked up many nice wins during the day and was often near the top  boards playing against much higher rated opponents. 

Four  players tied for second place: Varren Wong, Luke Meerkotter, Jacob Yao  and Seevan Kazemian. Luke's performance was particularly spectacular as  he caused a lot of early upsets, both drawing with and defeating several  players much higher rated than him during the first half of the day.

The third place prizes went to Liam Lougheed and Datis Dadras, both scoring 4.5 points.


The Novice Division was won by Teddy Sprigg with a score of 4.5. Teddy is  been improving rapidly and played some very good quality chess games  throughout the day.

Only half a  point behind Teddy, there was a five-way tie for second place between  Awder Baben, Hugo Vojkovich, Max Huang, Luca Morgan and Justin Huang,  all scoring 4 points. Awder's performance was particularly strong, as he lead the Novice division almost all day only to get passed in the very  last round.

Third place went to Soyombo Byambabat, scoring 3.5 points.

Event 6 Results

The sixth event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed  Chess League was held on Sunday 1st December at Perth Modern School and  attracted 49 participants.


The event was won by Daryoush Rafiei Darani and Aidan Malik who tied for  first place with a score of 8.5 points. Aidan and Daryoush both finished  undefeated, having drawn with each other and winning every other game. A  fantastic performance by both of them.

Second place was shared by Albert Chen and Samyar Kazemian, both scoring 6.5 points.

There  was a 7-way tie for third place between Thomas Dong, Shawn Boby, Jet  Mahanidis, Peter Sun, Florentyna Rithauddin, Uudamkhishig Togtmol and  Daniel Luong, all scoring 6 points.


The Intermediate division was won by Samuel Wu who scored 5.5 points.  Samuel had a fantastic event and found himself playing on the top boards  against much higher rated opponents for the entire tournament.

Seven players tied for second place with a score of 5: Ian Chen, Luke  Meerkotter, Liam Lougheed, Datis Dadras, Zeno Brackenridge, Jacob Yao  and Varren Wong.

The third place  prizes went to Andrew Low, Uranbaigali Uuganbaatar, Shijirkhutag  Nyamdari, Asher Koppolu, Luke Xie, Shijirgun Nyamdari, Khai Doan and  Alex Low, each scoring 4 points.


The Novice Division saw a 3-way tie for first place between Kendric Ong,  Saharsh Cheela and Orgil Temuulen who each scored 5 points.

Three players tied for second place with a score of 3.5: Teddy Sprigg, Vera P and Tristan Sun.

On 3 points there was a 5-way tie for third place between Khatangua  Nyamdari, Hugo Vojkovich, Ruiqi Chen, Justin Huang and Sofia Nguyen.
