The fifth event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League was held on Sunday 24th November at Perth Modern School and attracted 36 participants.
The event was won by Shawn Boby and Uudamkhishig Togtmol who tied for first place with a score of 7.5 points. Second place was taken by Albert Chen, only half a point behind the leaders with a score of 7 points. Peter Sun had another strong performance, scoring 6.5 points and taking the third place prize.
Special mention should be made of James Sommerfield's performance. He had the highest countback of the event, having played 7 of the other top 11 players and he still manage to score 5 points. The computer pairing program had a grudge on him today it seems!
The Intermediate division was won by Anay Patro who scored 5.5 points. Anay picked up many nice wins during the day and was often near the top boards playing against much higher rated opponents.
Four players tied for second place: Varren Wong, Luke Meerkotter, Jacob Yao and Seevan Kazemian. Luke's performance was particularly spectacular as he caused a lot of early upsets, both drawing with and defeating several players much higher rated than him during the first half of the day.
The third place prizes went to Liam Lougheed and Datis Dadras, both scoring 4.5 points.
The Novice Division was won by Teddy Sprigg with a score of 4.5. Teddy is been improving rapidly and played some very good quality chess games throughout the day.
Only half a point behind Teddy, there was a five-way tie for second place between Awder Baben, Hugo Vojkovich, Max Huang, Luca Morgan and Justin Huang, all scoring 4 points. Awder's performance was particularly strong, as he lead the Novice division almost all day only to get passed in the very last round.
Third place went to Soyombo Byambabat, scoring 3.5 points.
