2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League

The third event of the 2024 Perth Junior Speed Chess League was held Sunday 3rd November at Perth Modern School and attracted 41 participants.

There were 14 participants rated over 1000, making this another extremely strong event. The games on the top boards were very tough, with the lead changing hands many times over the course of the tournament.

The event was won by Quang Minh Le with a score of 7.5 points, only half a point ahead of second placed Peter Sun who scored 7. Third place was shared by Tian Teh and Florentyna Rithauddin, both scoring of 6.5 points. Six players scored 6 points, tying for 5th place:  Albert Chen, Kaviru Perera, Uudamkhishig Togtmol, Carlson Leo, James Sommerfield and Pranav Balasubramaniam.

The lead up to the end was extremely exciting. With only two games to go there was a 5-way tie for first place between Quang Minh Le, Tian Teh, Florentina Rithauddin, Kaviru Perera and Albert Chen. At the start of the final round, Quang Minh, Tian and Florentina were tied for first place leading to some tense final round games. Quang Minh defeated Florentina, while Tian lost to Peter Sun. This left Quang Minh as the sole champion.

Peter seemingly came out of nowhere, winning his last 4 games in a row to steal second place. A fantastic display of shear persistence.
